TIME TO HEAL COMMUNITY RELATIONSHIPS

By Scott Miller

Candidate for Sheriff/Coroner; County of Monterey

This information is provided by the candidate
We cannot afford to needlessly alienate Monterey County communities with poor community relations skills. We need to develop closer working relationships with our civil rights groups and neighborhoods.
If you're like me, you've heard the stories in the news over recent months of communities and neighborhoods throughout the county that feel they have not been served well by their Sheriff's Department. Some residents feel they are treated in a heavy-handed manner, with an occasional "my way or the highway" attitude. This has alienated good people for no good reason. At times the stories seem to indicate Sheriff personnel are unskilled at dealing with people in general; at other times, they are perceived as uncaring. While some of these complaints are likely unfounded, there are enough of them from diverse locations to create concern.

I have a thirty year track record of working amicably and effectively with neighborhood, community and civil rights groups. Even when we disagree, there is no need to be disagreeable. I have developed the kind of relationships that foster good community relations and more productive policing practices. I have implemented the philosophy of "Community Policing" in the cities where I've worked.

In these times of rising crime and violence, it's imperative that we work together in concert with our communities to improve public safety. Creating conflicts where no conflicts are necessary is counter-productive to good policing and community safety standards.

I also speak Spanish fluently, and have a history of reaching out to the various segments of our very diverse County population, some of which are often ignored. As Sheriff, I'll be the Sheriff for all of Monterey County and it's rich diversity.
