Joaquín Rivera: A teacher with vision for Alameda County Board of Education

ON SCHOOL FUNDING

Sacramento broke its promise to our kids. They keep cutting the budget for our schools while demanding that schools do more and more.

I will be a strong advocate to oppose the budget cuts that threaten our children's future and to protect funding and secure adequate resources for all our schools.

ON STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT

Students do better in schools that hold them to high academic standards and high expectations in a safe environment. Our schools should offer high quality educational programs and provide an exciting, stimulating environment for our children to learn.

I'm committed helping our schools adopt and implement new strategies to close the achievement gap and improve the academic performance of all students.

ON QUALITY TEACHERS

Quality teachers are key for student success. Our students deserve the best teachers.

As a college professor, I know what works in the classroom and how to get results. Teachers must have the skills they need to be successful in the classroom. That's why I will make quality professional development for teachers a top priority.

ON PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT

Parental involvement is essential for our students' success. Parents must be our partners in schools.

I will work to increase parental access to and involvement in their children's education and to ensure that our schools' doors are always open to parents.

ON EARLY LITERACY

Early intervention is the key to strong reading and writing skills. While on the Berkeley Board, I emphasized putting extra resources into early literacy programs. We saw results. I want to promote similar efforts for all schools in the county.
