Preamble of Karl L. Singleton, M.Ed

"When I go, I want to make sure I leave behind a legacy of promoting service for the underserved and unrepresented"
-Karl Singleton

Karl Singleton, Martin Luther King Leadership Development Institute Scholar, community leader and educator in the Central Pennsylvania area in excess of ten years, was born January 22, 1973 in Newark, New Jersey to Karl Sr. and Bernadine. Karl has four sisters. He and his better half, Gina, are the proud parents of four: Ashlee (23), KarMeisha (16), Alexis (8) and Karl III (5).

Karl's educational career has afforded him the opportunity to positively impact minds of diverse ages, cultural backgrounds and social economic status. He often draws from his first hand experiences growing up in the Housing Projects of Hall Manor and attending the Harrisburg City School District Grades 1-12; as a reference point from which to assist young people with academic and social enhancement. He believes that young people must use education as a way to becoming significant in their communities and not just successful.

In unison with his commitment to the field of education, Karl has channeled his compassion for the community into a solid constituency in and around the Capitol Region. This constituency has steadily increased since campaigning for public office in 1999. In 2008, Karl was just 176 votes shy of securing a seat in the Pennsylvania Legislature's 103rd District to represent: Harrisburg City, Highspire, Steelton and Swatara (Parts 1 & 3).

Karl credits his achievements as a professional and community leader to his unwavering loyalty of service to the underdog and underrepresented. This commitment to service has led him to the following roles throughout the past decade:

  • 1999 Clarion University Minority Student of the Year
  • 1999 Clarion University Ambassador of Diversity Award
  • First President of the Harrisburg Broncos Midget Football Association
  • Board Member for the Fair Housing Council of the Capital Region
  • Board Member for The Program for Female Offenders, Inc.
  • Board Member for the Pride of the Neighborhood Academies Inc.
  • Board Member for Harrisburg City School District's Elected Board
  • Board Member for The Boy's and Girl's Club of Central Pennsylvania
  • Co-Director Clarion University's Building Bridges Race Relations Program
  • Executive Board Member with the African American Chamber of Commerce
  • Executive Board, Vice President, of Men United for a Better Harrisburg Inc.
  • Founding Member of the Men Against Domestic Violence Chapter of the Capital Region (YWCA)
  • Member of PA Black Conference on Higher Education (2009 Vendor Chair)
  • Member of the Harrisburg Young Professionals
  • Member of PA Historical and Museum Commission's Black History Advisory Committee

Karl continuously works towards leveraging currently existing, not yet developed and essential partnership opportunities to benefit stakeholders in the commonwealth and beyond. The focus of these joint ventures has education, economic development, healthcare and eradicating crime at its core. It is Karl's belief that solidifying a foundation to address the needs in these areas, will afford communities and organizations opportunities to have greater access to information in order to attain resources necessary for positive progress.
