CULTURE CHANGE

By Kenneth Mark Sheaffer

Candidate for State Representative; District 199; Republican Party

At the present rate of deficit spending and moral decay, we are jeopardizing the future of our posterity.
The Roman Empire is still the longest surviving civilization in the world. The fall of the Roman Empire was brought about by corruption from within. After the Bay of Pigs in 1963 Nikita Krushehev stated that the United States would be destroyed from within. History has taught us that when we become complaisant and assume that bad things could never happen to us, we place ourselves in great danger. Just as our largest financial institutions perceived themselves as being to big to fail, they did just that. What makes our current government leadership think that it cannot happen to us? I believe the answer is a combination of greed and arrogance - the same thing that destroyed the Roman Empire. Some years ago, actor - Michael Douglas starred in the movie "GREED". I remember clearly his emphatic statement that "Greed is good." Nothing could be farther from the truth. I have been a Sunday School teacher for 35 years and have read the Bible several times. I have never read in the Bible that "greed is good"; in fact, it is considered to be one of the seven deadly sins. The Bible teaches moderation in all things, not to get more and more.

The adage "power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely" is alive and well in Harrisburg, Pa. Pennsylvania desperately needs term limits in order to break the deadlock created by powerful career politicians. We need leaders who care more about the future of our children and grandchildren and less about furthering their own political and self-enrichment ambitions. I believe that Representatives' terms should be lengthened from two years to four years and limited to four consecutive terms. State Senators' terms should be increased to six years and limited to three consecutive terms.

I believe that real health insurance reform must begin with tort reform. The current system is designed to benefit lawyers. Because over 70% of our current legislators in Pennsylvania are lawyers, it is safe to assume that they would not vote in favor of changes that would hurt their profession. When one occupation has this much control, it creates a monopoly. I believe our founding fathers intended our government to be made up of citizens from all walks of life. In order to achieve positive change in Pennsylvania, we must level the playing field. This must be done by the voters. I am not a lawyer!! I need your support to make positive changes in Harrrisburg. Yours in Service. Ken Sheaffer
