PERSONAL HISTORY

Jeff Lindy and his wife of 19 years, Nancy, live in Bala Cynwyd located in Lower Merion Township, Montgomery County. They have two children, who attend the Lower Merion public schools.

Born in Springfield Township, Montgomery County, Jeff grew up in a close knit family where he learned the values of service to country and community, humility, hard work, and perseverance.

Jeff's father, Alan Lindy was a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and veteran of the Korean War. Alan Lindy died when Jeff was 12. After his father's death, Jeff's mother, Joy Lindy, with the help of Jeff's grandmothers, Frieda Lindy and Agnes Dienes raised Jeff. His family attended synagogue at Keneseth Israel in Elkins Park, where Agnes Dienes' nephew, Bertram Korn, served as Senior Rabbi.

Jeff is a graduate of Cornell University and Temple University School of Law. He earned Dean's List distinction at both institutions. At Temple Law, Jeff also received the prestigious Barrister's Award and Teaching Fellowship for outstanding achievement in trial advocacy.

PROFESSIONAL HISTORY

Jeff Lindy's professional achievements are vast. After 23 years of a well balanced career -- practicing as a courtroom lawyer, trying cases and making appellate arguments before both state and federal juries and judges; writing sophisticated legal briefs; prosecuting and defending criminal cases; offering needed advice to clients in crisis; and negotiating resolutions in complex business disputes -- Jeff well deserves the numerous awards and honors that he has received as well as his reputation for legal excellence.

His demeanor and even-handedness have served him well in both the fields of criminal and civil litigation. He has achieved distinction as a prosecutor earning the respect of his peers on both sides of the courtroom; has been honored by the criminal defense bar for his work with the poor and indigent; is sought out by both plaintiffs and defendants in complex commercial disputes; and is appointed by judges to serve as a Neutral Arbitrator to resolve insurance conflicts.

As Prosecutor

Jeff served as an Assistant United States Attorney in the Department of Justice, Office of the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District Pennsylvania. During his tenure as a federal prosecutor, he served on the President's Drug Task Force and prosecuted drug traffickers, money launderers, tax cheats, embezzlers and those engaged in bank, mail and wire fraud. At a special ceremony in Washington, D.C., Jeff received the coveted John Marshall Award which was personally presented to him by the Attorney General of the United States. His work also earned him Commendations from the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Secret Service, and personal recognition from the Director of the FBI.

Prior to joining the U.S. Attorney's Office, Jeff served as an Assistant District Attorney under Elizabeth Holtzman in Brooklyn, N.Y. As a state prosecutor for that office, he successfully prosecuted child abusers, rapists and other violent criminals, and political corruption and environmental crimes cases.

Private Practice As Defense Attorney

After leaving the government, Jeff was a senior litigation associate at a large law firm and, in 1995, he founded his own law firm. Since then, Jeff and the attorneys who work for him have concentrated their practice in criminal defense and commercial litigation. Jeff represents companies and individuals under investigation for, or charged with, white collar crimes and in related civil and administrative litigation. He also represents clients in commercial litigation involving complex business disputes and clients charged in more traditional state court criminal matters. Jeff is currently also an Assistant County Solicitor (part-time), appointed by Montgomery County to represent medical facilities in mental health hearings.

In The Classroom

Jeff's professional accomplishments are not limited to the courtroom, but he excels in the classroom as well. Jeff is a faculty member of the National Institute of Trial Advocacy ("NITA") where he teaches trial practice and procedure to attorneys from all levels of experience. He also teaches federal public defenders and private criminal defense practitioners around the nation serving as a faculty instructor for the Training Branch of the Office of Defender Services of the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts. Jeff lectures and teaches extensively at colleges and universities, including Drexel Medical School and the United States Military Academy at West Point, has been an invited speaker at Judicial Conferences conducted by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, and was an adjunct professor of law at Temple Law School.

Public Service

After his many years of service as a prosecutor, Jeff continues to contribute to the public good through his community service and his legal work on behalf of the poor. He engages in this work due to his belief that those of us who are fortunate have an obligation to give back to our communities. Understanding that a society is judged by how it treats its most needy and vulnerable citizens, Jeff's reputation for having an unwavering commitment to public service has been hard earned.

Jeff is a vital member of the Criminal Justice Act (CJA) Panel, a select group of practitioners, approved by the federal court , who receive appointments to represent indigent criminal defendants. In recognition of his expertise and contributions to the Panel, in 2006, Jeff was appointed by the Chief Judge of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania to represent the interests of the 200 attorneys on the Panel.

As the District Representative to the CJA Panel, Jeff's responsibilities include assisting Panel attorneys with substantive questions pertaining to their cases and administrative questions about obtaining funds for legal fees and experts, and serving as a liaison between the CJA Panel and federal prosecutors and public defenders, the federal trial and appellate courts, and the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts in Washington.

Community Service

Jeff Lindy was elected and served for many years as Board Member, Officer and then President of the Bala Cynwyd civic association, known as "The Neighborhood Club of Bala Cynwyd," one of the oldest civic associations in the region having celebrated its 100th birthday several years ago. Currently, Jeff is a Board Member of the Union Fire Association, a volunteer fire company protecting the communities of Bala Cynwyd and Merion. He also is a Member of the Board of the Education Foundation of Lower Merion, a not-for-profit fundraising vehicle which supports programs and activities in the Township's public schools. Jeff is also on the Board of Directors of the Elmwood Park Zoo, a vital educational and civic institution in Norristown for the past 85 years. Elmwood Park Zoo fosters an appreciation of wildlife and their habitat, and inspires active participation in conservation as it welcomes over 130,000 visitors annually. In recognition of his contributions to the community, in 2006, Jeff was named Citizen of the Year.

Boards & Honors

Jeff's professional and civic accomplishments are evident from the numerous boards on which he has been asked to serve and the honors that he has received, including:

  • He served as a Board Member of the National Clearinghouse for the Defense of Battered Women, a non-profit dedicated to providing legal assistance to abused women facing criminal charges.

  • In 2002, he received the Pennsylvania Legal Services Emissary for Justice Award in recognition of his efforts to help pass the Access to Justice Act.

  • In 2006, Jeff was appointed to the U.S. Magistrate Judge Selection Committee by the Chief Judge of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. As a member of the Committee, he interviewed, evaluated, and nominated Magistrate Judge candidates for consideration and selection by the District Court Bench.

  • Jeff was the Keynote Speaker in 2005, having been invited by the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts to open the three-day national seminar entitled, "Winning Strategies."

  • Jeff currently is a Federal Trustee on the Board of Directors of the Defender Association of Philadelphia.

  • Jeff's diverse and broad reaching achievements have earned him recognition as a "Pennsylvania Super Lawyer."
