Accomplishments of My First Term

By Jeffrey Shapiro

Candidate for School Director; Marple Newtown School District

This information is provided by the candidate
I have achieved a number of significant things in my first term as detailed in this paper.
I strongly advocated administrative action which resulted in definitive personnel actions to benefit students. I obtained backing from fellow Board members to change the administrative policy on classroom evaluations. Historically, teachers knew when they were going to be evaluated. Because of my efforts evaluations are now supposed to be unannounced.

I sponsored the motion several years ago which allowed the school district to preserve the option to secure funding in the future for a High School renovation project. The action to actually obtain funding was recently approved by the current School Board by a vote of 8-1.

I have consistently voted against the expansion of the administration and also against administrative pay raises which I feel are excessive.

Since being on the Board I have been a member of the Human Resources Committee as well as Chairperson for one year. I have also served on the Curriculum, Instruction, and Technology Committee. I have served as PSBA Legislative Representative, served on the Legal Oversight Subcommittee, and served for periods of time as Marple Newtown High School and Loomis Board Liaison. I have also been very active as a non-voting member at meetings of the Budget & Finance Committee and the Facilities & Transportation Committee. I have also voluntarily taken on and completed a number of special projects as requested by Board Presidents during my term.

During my term my wife and I have sponsored three separate $2000 scholarships and acted as mentors for the recipients over a four year period as part of the Sponsor-a-Scholar program.

Recently, the Board unanimously approved the creation of the new Academic Committee. Its goal is to study and enhance the academic environment in the School District. I was appointed Chairperson and am humbled to have the confidence of my fellow Board members in this area.
