Biographical Sketch of Yolanda L. M. Booker Democratic Candidate for William Penn School Board Member

Yolanda L. Booker is a graduate from Widener University with a B.A. in English. While pursuing her studies and working full time at Independence Blue Cross Family of Companies (IBC), Yolanda received honors status in her major, inducted into Sigma Tau Delta International English Honor Society and Who's Who Among Universities and Colleges. She plans pursue a Masters of Education degree in 2010.

Yolanda's has an extensive background working with education professionals as an Administrative Assistant for the Maryland State Teachers Association (MSTA). During her 13 year employment with MSTA, Yolanda has held the following positions:

  • President of the Maryland State Teachers Association Staff Organization (MSTASO) staff union (elected two terms)
  • Vice-President (MSTASO)
  • Co-facilitator of MSTA's Professional Development and Training
  • 10 years experience as a Parent Advocate for Special Education students sponsored by Baltimore City Public Schools

While raising two sons, Yolanda served as Vice President of the Parent Teachers Association at Leith Walk Elementary School in Baltimore. Other volunteer activities include:

  • Northwood Little League Baseball
  • Gardenville Little League Baseball
  • Cardinal Sheehan Basketball League
  • Cardinal Sheehan Soccer League

Currently, Yolanda volunteers as a reading coach for Philadelphia Reads, one of many community outreach programs sponsored by IBC. As a reading coach, Yolanda assists first graders with reading fundamentals once a week during her lunch break.

Yolanda's commitments as School Board Member for William Penn School District:

  • Building educational achievement together for the betterment of All children in WPSD

  • Accountability
