Smart Voter Political Philosophy for Peggy D. Reis

Candidate for
Trustee; Township of Anderson

This information is provided by the candidate

BACKGROUND

I have been a resident of Anderson for 46 years. I have three wonderful children, two of whom attended Forest Hills schools and graduated from Turpin High School. Unfortunately my two terrific grandsons live across the nation in Seattle, Washington. While I don't have the benefit of having family members close, I do have the benefit of a strong church family at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church. It is a great support for me.

CONSERVATIVE PHILOSOPHY

Conservatism can be a political philosophy or an approach to life. I believe it should be both. Our founders understood that it is the natural right of every individual to live freely under self government, to acquire and retain the property he creates through his own labor, and to be treated impartially before a just law. Following these principles ensures liberty and a civil society. Our Constitution granted the federal government enough authority to cultivate and promote liberty, but not enough authority to destroy it. I do not believe it should be subject to interpretation, as methods for proposing amendments are provided. We must rely on our founding principles. Ronald Reagan once said, "Millions of individuals making their own decisions in the market place will always allocate resources better than any centralized government planning process."

Conservatism in public life reflects forethought, prudence, and truthfulness. I believe that each of us was born with a place to fill in the world, with lessons to learn and gifts to give. Community service has been one of my personal gifts to give. I have had the benefit of living in a township where government is simple, efficient, and cost effective. I have had the privilege of serving for nearly twenty years as an elected member of the Board of Township Trustees of Anderson Township. My practice has been to represent all the residents, not just a vocal few, and to be available and responsive whenever residents call or write. Solving problems, whenever possible, is what I am elected to do.

Conservatism in private life has led me to believe that less is more. The simplicity of township government is clearly an example of this principle. My parents' expectations were that I have high aspirations for myself. I was taught that one should work hard, save money, not spend more than one can afford, and learn from mistakes. I have tried to be compassionate, good and kind to others, and while I always try to stand by my personal convictions, I have learned that flexibility, teamwork, and consensus are important. When times are difficult the challenge is to stand strong, be brave of heart, and act on courage not fear. I have tried to set an example for my children and have tried to teach them to use good judgment and make wise decisions. I know from experience that we all should hold onto our vision, our goals, and our dreams. I believe that it is always the right time to do what is right.

My hope is that as I have shared my beliefs with you, you will continue your belief in me next November.
