Candidate for Board Member; Forest Hills Local School District

This information is provided by the candidate
During the next four years, the most critical challenge for Forest Hills is to insure that adequate funding is available to continue district wide academic excellence while living in times of decreasing state funding and a difficult economy. Because personnel costs total 86% of the district budget, we must work in a positive, productive manner with the district's three unions to devise creative solutions to control costs but at the same time keep and attract top notch employees. We must also implement a plan to effectively communicate with the public about school funding challenges and solutions, with particular outreach to the approximately 75% of registered voters who do not have children attending Forest Hills schools.

The district's second challenge is to implement a seamless succession plan to replace retiring Superintendent Dr. John Patzwald, who has served Forest Hills with distinction for 17 years. The Board must conduct a thorough search to hire an excellent candidate by the end of the 2009-2010 school year.

A third challenge is to fashion a comprehensive and economically feasible plan for maintenance and enhancement of aging district facilities. We must re-energize the district's Facilities Committee to continue and conclude the work begun by the Vision 2010 facilities study. The Board must implement short term and long term goals for our facilities, with initial focus on current needs of Wilson Elementary and implementation of the state mandated all-day Kindergarten program which we must begin in 2010 or 2011.

I am grateful to serve on the Forest Hills Board of Education and look forward to continuing that service.
