Summary Prepared by League of Women Voters:
Explanation: This levy proposes a renewal of an existing levy for the Cincinnati City School District. It will raise $65,178,000 each year for general operating expenses for the Cincinnati Public School District and run for a period of five years. The tax levy of 9.11 mills renews an operating levy that was first approved by voters in 1980 and has been renewed five times since its original passage. Although the current levy does not expire until the end of 2010, the Cincinnati Board of Education is seeking renewal now so that the Board and Administration can plan for the 2010-11 school year budget which must be finalized by the end of June, 2010. The $65.2 million raised by the levy comprises 14 % of the district's total budget of $467 million. The money will continue to pay for district operating costs including classroom teachers, staff, books, transportation and supplies for the district's 34,000 students. The Cincinnati Board of Education placed this renewal levy on the November ballot.
