Bailouts, Deficits and the National Debt

In the past year, the deficit has exploded and our national debt has spiraled out of control.

The federal government's serial bailouts of banks, automakers, insurance companies and mortgage guarantors have piled mammoth debt on our children, while the so-called stimulus has burdened the economy instead of fostering growth.

I'm running for Congress to stop this runaway spending. I will fight to bring some fiscal common sense, prudence and thrift in how your tax dollars are spent.

Health Care Reform

Any health care reform must first do no harm. Congress must ensure that any reform does not reduce the quality or availability of our health care.

In Congress, I will strive to empower patients with more choices, better access and higher quality care. I will also work to remove tax and legal policies that push people into third-party payer systems, and I will fight to eliminate unnecessary mandates that help inflate health care costs.

Education

All four of my children attend excellent public schools. My wife, Elayne, is a substitute teacher for the San Ramon Valley Unified School District. I've served as Treasurer, and now serve as Vice President, of the Windemere Ranch Middle School Education Fund.

I believe passionately that every child deserves the opportunity for a good education. I understand the frustrations of parents, teachers and administrators who face funding challenges and bureaucratic complexity in trying to provide one. In Congress, I'll continue working to maximize educational opportunities for students, while resisting efforts to centralize authority in Sacramento or Washington.

Energy

I favor a forward-thinking "all of the above" energy policy that promotes conservation and cost-effective, environmentally sound alternatives to conventional energy sources, while also developing our own natural resources.

What we don't need is a new national energy tax -- especially in this tough economy. Our energy policy must be balanced, and must seek to enhance existing supplies while we get more renewable energy production up and running.

National Security

In Congress, I will work to responsibly address the growing nuclear threats from dangerous and unpredictable countries like North Korea and Iran.

While supporting diplomatic measures to resolve these situations, I will convey the united resolve of the American people to protect our citizens, allies and interests. Any commitment of American lives or tax dollars overseas should occur only after cautious, judicious and bipartisan deliberation.
