City-School Liaison Committee

By Nancy Shepherd

Candidate for Council Member; City of Palo Alto

This information is provided by the candidate
The partnership between the City and School District needs to be open and good.
Currently there is an atmosphere of open dialogue in the City-School Liaison Committee, which is good. I would like to see Council and the School Board establish a clearer understanding regarding the use of shared fields, recreation programs and mental health issues.

When I was PTA Council President I regularly attended Council meetings to keep Council members informed of school issues and to advocate for Council to support youth activities. I did this as part of a larger effort to ensure that Council and School Board would maintain a close and integrated relationship. My efforts included hosting sessions between the PTA Council and City Council members, the city manager and fire and police chiefs so that the school leaders and PTA Presidents could have better direct communication in an unstructured setting.

I am strongly motivated to maintain a direct communication between the City and School leadership so that appropriate youth issues are addressed by Council. I also want to see more youth included in the decisions that affect them, both so their interests can be heard and also so they are exposed to the concept of civic duty.
