Smart Voter Full Biography for Christopher R. Moylan

Candidate for
Council Member; City of Sunnyvale; Seat 2

This information is provided by the candidate

Christopher R. Moylan grew up in New York and has lived in Santa Clara County since 1979. He was educated at Princeton and Stanford, and now works as the Senior Scientist at a startup company called SuperBulbs, developing advanced light bulbs that use light-emitting diodes (LEDs) rather than hot wires or mercury vapor. He also holds an adjunct faculty position at UC Santa Cruz. His age is 52.

Before his current position, Chris served as Lecturer and Director of Undergraduate Laboratories at Stanford for five years. Before that, he worked for four employers as a scientist, including 13 years at IBM, most of that at the Almaden Research Center in San Jose. Chris has also worked for three other startup companies: Lightwave Microsystems, Adven Polymers, and Wavesplitter Technologies. His favorite job ever was working as a lifeguard and swimming instructor at his hometown pool, which is why he became an active member of the Friends of the Fremont Pool. The Friends were instrumental in persuading the city and the high school district to work together to build the Olympic pool at Fremont High School.

Chris has been married to his wife, Julie, (a fourth-generation Sunnyvale resident) since 1993. Julie and Chris met when they were cast opposite each other in a community theater production of "Fiddler on the Roof." They have two children: Billy, age 13, and Katy, age 10. Billy attends Cupertino Middle School, and Katy goes to West Valley Elementary School, both in the Cupertino Union School District. West Valley parents know Chris as one of the more histrionic exhibitors at Science Night each year.

Chris is the only resident of south Sunnyvale (zip code 94087, everything south of El Camino Real) running for Council this year. If reelected, he will be the only Councilmember who lives in the southern half of the city.
