Make Cupertino a more Green and Environmentally progressive city

By Barry Chang

Candidate for Council Member; City of Cupertino

This information is provided by the candidate
Barry Chang believes that the City should employ more Green and alternative energy technology on its buildings and implement Green building guidelines. Cupertino should also try to attract Green and clean energy companies into the city.
I was a delegate of the China Green Energy Council that was invited to discuss green energy and energy conservation with Congressional members in Washington DC. I also met with members of the Department of Energy. Science has demonstrated that pollution from fossil fuels, especially from the developed and developing nations, is rapidly heating up the planet resulting in disastrous climate changes. I consider myself an environmentalist and immensely enjoy our parks and open spaces. I believe that reducing pollution and saving our environment should be everyone's responsibility.

As a progressive city Cupertino needs to place more emphasis upon green and clean alternative energy opportunities. The city should have plans for installing solar panels and solar heating on public buildings and employing alternative fueled and hybrid vehicles to serve as an example for the rest of the community. This will not only reduce pollution from fossil fuels and preserve natural resources but save on long term energy cost. We have such good weather here, ideal for such technologies. The city should also implement comprehensive green building guidelines and phased in green building requirements for new construction. If we can spend money on a suspension bridge we can certainly spend some on solar energy and perhaps even install solar storage cells and LED light to illuminate the bridge at night.

We need to find creative ideas to encourage companies that sell, manufacture, or develop alternative clean energy or green technologies to reside in Cupertino. Cupertino was one of the birthplaces of Silicon Valley. Let it now be one of the birth places of Clean Energy Valley. This will also help bring in needed tax revenues to the city.

When elected I will push to make green and clean energy more of a priority. It is an investment in the future that cannot be delayed.
