Smart Voter Political Philosophy for Emmett O'Donnell

Candidate for
Council Member; Town of Tiburon

This information is provided by the candidate

Please support my candidacy in the upcoming Tiburon Town Council election. I have the experience of volunteering in town government for almost seven years, having served on both the Planning Commission and the DRB. I will also bring a unique set of financial and management skills to the council, having owned and operated a business in the Bay Area for more than 20 years, employing over 50 individuals.

I graduated from Groton School and Harvard University. Following college, I worked as a teacher overseas and then in international business for a few years. I moved to California in 1987 and have lived in Tiburon since 2001. Today, my wife Cindie and I reside on Mountain View Drive and we have one son, Kellen, who attends Reed School. I'm a member of the TPC and the SFYC, and I have coached Little League. Cindie has volunteered for Bookmarks and BHNS. My family and I are very involved in our community, which we love dearly. I will serve with an open mind and a large dose of common sense. Good governance is working in a collegial manner with all townspeople. I will continue that spirit of cooperation. Among the many issues we face, I will advocate for the following in a positive, constructive manner:

Finances: I will serve as a good steward of the town's finances, maintaining a conservative fiscal strategy, while at the same time creating a long term strategic plan for spending on improvement to the town's aesthetics and infrastructure. The town has a healthy reserve, which should be maintained, however a portion of it can be put to use for greater public benefit.

Tiburon Boulevard: I will promote an aesthetic improvement to the entire length of Tiburon Boulevard, which would include a landscaping and maintenance plan, an under-grounding of utilities, planting the medium strips near the intersection with Blackfield Drive. Tiburon Boulevard is the town's artery and its entrance to downtown. Aesthetic improvements are overdue.

Downtown: The vitality of the downtown is of paramount importance, and I will work collaboratively and proactively with downtown property owners and business people so that town government supports the creation of new businesses, promotes existing ones, and encourages greater development within this area. We need a vibrant downtown that serves both our citizenry and our visitors.

Cameras: I support the installation of license plate reading cameras at egress points in town to give the police the technology they need to solve crime.

Library: I support the library expansion project, favoring an extension to the rear of the building.

Recreation and Open Space:. I will support our parks, the General Plan with respect to maximum preservation of open space, and the recreational master plan that is being developed.

Martha: I will support the proposed litigation settlement with respect to the Martha Property. The chance to pursue the land for open space begins with a settlement, as it creates a means of assessing value.

We live in a wonderful community, but we can aspire to make it better.
