Here are a few things you should know about me.

RE-ELECT DR. PAUL HELZER

BELLFLOWER UNIFIED SCHOOL BOARD
Candidate Statement for Paul L. Helzer D.C. PhD. Incumbent BUSD Board of Education

I have lived in Bellflower most of my life. I went to school here, as did my children and grandchildren. I have owned a business in the city of Bellflower for over 30 years. I'm deeply committed to our community, our schools and our children. During my last two terms, I have worked tirelessly to give my community the best schools possible. Here are a few things you should know:

  • Unlike most districts in our state, we have not laid off people, sent out pink slips, increased class sizes, or lost any of our core programs (sports, arts, languages, music, gifted and special education).
  • Because of the co-operation between our Board, administration, teacher and employee unions, we have a balanced budget!
  • We have not asked you for school bonds, or any new taxes. I believe we must live within our means.
  • We have award winning elementary schools. Our high schools just got a six year accreditation rating from the State Board of Education (the highest they give) and our campuses are safe and clean (no metal detectors)!
  • Bellflower and Downey, have the highest graduation rates in the area at 97% with an above average passing rate on the state high school exit exam.
  • We have a brand new stadium, ball diamonds and gym. We share these facilities with the city's park and recreation department, so every home team has a field to play on.
  • I fought for and continue to preserve Mosier Little League Field.
  • We are the first to have a fleet of clean burning, energy efficient, natural gas buses, with our own fuel station and repair shop. We make a little money selling fuel and repairs to other cities and schools!
  • We are near completion on a central kitchen that will replace all the worn out school cafeteria sites. This kitchen will save money and cut down on wasted food. It is energy efficient and paid for by the catering service it provides.
  • We took over our special education program from the county, saving money and giving better service.

California and our district face a difficult and challenging future. We need board members that are experienced to guide us through. I stand by my record. I have always supported our teachers and staff. I have an open door policy. Parents, teachers, students and members of the community are always welcome in my office. Please help me continue the level of excellence we have achieved.
