Measure M is a City Council initiative which seeks to require voter approval prior to any transfer of the City’s fire or police services to another public entity.

The City of Montebello has maintained and operated an independent, locally controlled fire and police departments. The Montebello fire department and police department are locally governed and are not operated by the County of Los Angeles. This Measure would maintain the local control over the City’s fire and police services and would not permit the transfer of these public safety services to the County of Los Angeles or any other outside entity without prior voter approval. Measure M adds a new section to the Montebello Municipal Code and requires that fire and police services be provided by City employees.

In order to allow a change in fire or police services from a city controlled department to another governmental agency, a super majority of 55% of the voters of the city voting at that time at any regular or special municipal election is required. Unless the voters approve such a transfer of fire or police services, the fire and police department will be maintained and operated by the City of Montebello.

A “Yes” vote would support maintaining local control over public safety services and would require a super majority voter approval and would establish other conditions to permit any transfer of fire and/or police services.

A “No” vote would allow for the transfer of police and/or fire services as determined by the City Council without prior voter approval and maintain the existing the City ordinances.
