Councilmember Ana Apodaca has served on the Newark City Council since December 2005 and is running for re-election this November. Ana is a long-time resident of Newark, attended local schools, and is a graduate of CSU East Bay (formerly CSU Hayward). She works in the community and government relations sector and previously worked with the California Legislature for nearly a decade to solve local, regional and statewide issues. She is the youngest Latina ever to serve on Newark's City Council.

Ana thrives on giving back to her community and has been actively involved in public service throughout the East Bay. She serves on the board of directors for the Hispanic Community Affairs Council, and is an Advisory Board member for SAVE (Safe Alternatives for Violent Environments). Ana formerly served on the Alameda County Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) and was a mentor for the Puente Project at Chabot Community College.

She represents the City of Newark on the Alameda County Library Advisory Commission, the Alameda County Transportation Improvement Authority (ACTIA), the Dumbarton Rail Policy Advisory Committee, the Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG), Second Chance, Inc. and the Newark City Council - Newark Board of Education Joint Youth Task Force. She also participated in the City of Newark and Newark Unified School District Strategic Planning Committee and the Newark Business Education Roundtable

Some of Ana's accolades have included the "Latinas Moving Upward" public service award from the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Alameda County and the St. Edward's School Distinguished Alumni of the Year award. In October, she will be honored as the 2009 Catholic Charities of the East Bay Business Woman of the Year.
