Building Strong, Safe and Sustainable Neighborhoods

By Travis Reems

Candidate for Alderperson; City of Saint Louis; Ward 25; Democratic Party

This information is provided by the candidate
Two of the most pervasive problems facing the 25th ward are crime and instability. Dutchtown has been identified as having the highest crime rate in the city--a city that in the past few years has been recognized as the most crime ridden city in America. Together we can tackle crime! The next Alderman of our ward will need to be able to effectively use the Problem Properties Initiative. We must identify our ward's problem properties and place them in one of two categories:

  • Vacant buildings for which I will seek resolution from the Problem Properties Court
  • Behavior-based problem properties for which I will work with the City-wide Problem Property Public Safety Committee to issue a 30-day Cease and Desist Order, and I will work proactively with the City Counselor's Office to arrest the problem

Further, our next Alderman must be able to proactively pursue Weed and Seed Program federal grants to fund initiatives, such as increased Police patrols. And, I will work to establish special districts to provide additional funding for these initiatives.

Ultimately only a block-by-block approach will work to stabilize our ward and root out crime. Which is why I will work to build a strong block-unit program through a more proactive Neighborhood Stabilization Program Initiative. And, in conjunction with the Juvenile Courts, I will work to reduce juvenile delinquent recidivism.

The resources are available for our ward to help itself, we only need proactive leadership with the right vision to pursue them.
