As a City Councilmember I follow these principles for interacting with constituents and for making sound policy decisions:

1. I define constituents very broadly. Constituents to me are not just voters, they also include people who maybe non-voters but who have a stake in community decisions. These people include children, immigrants, business owners, property owners, people who work in San Gabriel and people who may live adjacent to San Gabriel.
2. I welcome and value critics and criticism.
3. I make myself available to constituents to discuss community issues.
4. Often times the most important part of communicating with constituents is to let them know that I genuinely value and appreciate their opinions, suggestions, comments, and or concerns.
5. I welcome new ideas and recommendations from diverse groups, I do not have a monopoly on good ideas.
6. I treat everyone with respect, even if they are rude and disrespectful.
7. Public input and involvement are essential when making policy decisions.
8. I understand that I have been elected to make tough policy decisions for which there are sometimes no easy answers.
9. Don't re-invent the wheel. San Gabriel has a award winning Comprehensive General Plan that was approved and developed after years of public hearings and community input. My job is to see that the community's vision is carried out.
10. Ultimately, my decisions are guiding by the principle that I am a Stewart of San Gabriel. San Gabriel was here before I was born, and it will be here after I am gone. I have the opportunity and privilege to make decisions that will make San Gabriel better then before I was elected, for current and future generations. I take this responsibility very seriously.
