Making America Energy Independent

By Jason Altmire

Candidate for US Representative; District 4

This information is provided by the candidate
America needs to utilize all of its available resources right now, and we must take bold, comprehensive action to address our nation's energy crisis.
America needs to take bold, comprehensive action to end our dependence on foreign oil. I am proud to have played a part in Congress' historic decision to lift the moratorium on offshore drilling and open up vast new areas for oil and gas production.

I also voted for comprehensive legislation that will open new areas for drilling, release oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, which has historically proven to be the fastest way to lower gas prices; and increase investments in alternative energy. I am a strong advocate for increasing our investment in nuclear energy and clean coal technology, two alternative energy sources which could be powerful engines for economic growth in western Pennsylvania.

Finally, we must strengthen conservation efforts. Last year, I voted to raise fuel efficiency standards for cars to 35 mpg. This will help save families as much as $1,000 a year.

I will continue working to pursue every viable option that can increase America's energy independence.
