Experience and leadership.

By Evelyn L. Stratton

Candidate for Justice; Ohio State Supreme Court; 6 Year Term Starting 1/2/09

This information is provided by the candidate
My prior experience as a trial attorney and trial judge provided a solid foundation for my twelve years of service on the Supreme Court of Ohio. After nine years in private practice, I became the first woman elected as judge on the Franklin County Common Pleas Court in Columbus. I presided over many cases ranging from capital murder trials to major civil actions. My approach to sentencing in serious felony cases earned the nickname "The Velvet Hammer."

I have been twice elected to the Supreme Court where I have decided major constitutional issues and legal issues of public or great, general interest in Ohio. In the past twelve years as a Justice, I have gained much wisdom and experience in many different areas of the law.

My leadership in areas of judicial administration and court reform also better qualify me to serve another term. While serving as a justice, I have been involved in adoption law reform and court security initiatives for all Ohio courts. I have advocated a partnership between courts and the mental health system to help improve the lives of criminal defendants, reduce cost to society and enhance public safety.
