Immigration

By Cynthia "Cindy" Redburn

Candidate for US Representative; District 3

Welcoming legal and productive immigrants
I support immigration. Diversity is good. It strengthens us as it brings a variety of ideas and perspectives to the table that benefit us all, as we live, work and play together. So, I welcome all who come here to live in freedom and pursue their dreams, as Americans.

However, without that commonality of purpose, diversity becomes destructive and divisive. A recent report has indicated that real figures for illegal immigrants may be as high as 38 million. Sadly, many legal and illegal immigrants are not coming here to assimilate and become productive American citizens. Too many of these lawbreakers have no desire to become American citizens and therein, lies the problem. A problem that is exacerbated by the failure of our government to perform one of its most basic duties.

One of the primary responsibilities of government is to protect and secure our borders; keeping us safe from all enemies, foreign and domestic. I don't know about you, but as far as I'm concerned, that many people entering our country illegally constitutes an invasion.

This is a grave situation, that has been created by the federal government's failure to enforce its own laws. State and local governments are working to pass legislation and ordinances to deal with the problems created by the absence of federal oversight. Some have been successful, while others have been challenged every step of the way.

Not only are immigration laws ignored, our president (without any Congressional oversight) is pursuing a plan to merge our nation, Canada, and Mexico into a North American Union. The use of unconstitutional free trade agreements and partnerships, such as NAFTA, CAFTA , FTAA and other agreements are incrementally paving the way for this merger. If this union is accomplished, there will be no need for a border between our nation and its neighbors to the north and south! We will have lost our identity and sovereignty as a nation, and I know that would be totally unacceptable to the majority of American citizens.

Once again, common sense provides a fairly simple solution; secure our borders, cut off all benefits to illegals, and prosecute employers and others, who are exploiting these people for personal and corporate gain. Without jobs and government benefits, there will be no reason for illegal immigrants to remain in our country.
