Why am I an Independent?

By Jim Fitzgerald

Candidate for State Senator; District 15

This information is provided by the candidate
"As an Independent, I am not restricted from exploring the ideas presented by all parties."
I chose to be an Independent a number of years ago. I did so because my views on the issues cross party lines. I don't want to be bound by party rhetoric. For instance:

  • I want to see every Californian covered by a basic health care insurance plan, but I do not want the government to be the administrator.

  • I believe that we need to look toward renewable, sustainable and clean energy sources, but right now we need to drill. However I am against off-shore drilling.

  • I believe in sealing the borders, but I also support a guest worker program.

What we need is sensible compromise. We need a new way of thinking in the legislature. We need fresh ideas and the willingness to explore the other side of the issues. I can bring this way of thinking to California. As someone who is not affiliated with either party, I won't feel the pressure to vote down party lines. I won't feel the pressure to vote for any special interest group. In fact, the only special interest group that I will have is "YOU", the people of the 15th Senate District.
