Community Services, Public Safety & Traffic

By Janet Orchard

Candidate for Council Member; City of Cotati

This information is provided by the candidate
Preserving and enhancing vital community services, and solving traffic congestion are among key issues facing our city.
Janet is proud to have helped our city make good economic decisions that allow the City to provide and expand vital community services such as community policing and enhancement of the recreation program, as well as the establishment of new public buildings such as the very popular Cotati Community Room. Even as the nation faces one of the most severe economic downturns in recent history, Cotati has worked hard to not cut vital services, nor raise taxes.

Janet believes finding solutions to traffic congestion continues to be of the highest importance. Cotati, as with the rest of the county, is choked by traffic and Janet has always believed solving traffic gridlock is key to preserving Cotati's quality of life. She strongly supports the SMART Train (Measure Q) which will be on November's ballot and is carrying materials in support of the measure as she walks door-to-door for re-election. She also campaigned for Measure M, the successful county ballot measure to improve local streets and roads and fund the 101 project, as she went door-to-door for re-election in 2004.

During Janet's tenure, the City successfully mitigated additional traffic from Lowe's and made street and circulation improvements in the northern part of town. Janet has always strongly supported alternatives to the automobile, including rail, increased public transportation, and expanded bicycle lanes and pedestrian paths.

Janet voted in support of Cotati's Multi-Modal Transportation facility. Additionally, Cotati is moving forward with an extremely important project; the pedestrian and bicycle connection across E. Cotati Avenue that will connect North and South Cotati on this very busy street. Not only will this enhance public safety, it will provide an important and previously missing link in neighborhood connectivity.
