Arguments For Measure W Arguments Against Measure W
PROTECT REDWOOD CITY OPEN SPACE -- VOTE YES ON W, NO ON V

Only Measure W protects Redwood City parks, open space and Cargill salt ponds from harmful development. YES on W is supported by 6,500 Redwood City residents, Save The Bay, Friends of Redwood City, Sierra Club, Sequoia Audubon Society, Committee for Green Foothills, former Congressman Pete McCloskey and former Senator Byron Sher.

Measure V is the `counter-measure' the City Council placed on the ballot. It would benefit out-of-state developers who want to build thousands of new housing units on 1,400 acres of baylands, adding tens of thousands more daily car trips to our already congested roads, and overburdening our water supply.

Only the measure that gets more votes will become law. The difference is great, and the choice is clear:

Vote YES on W and NO on V to let voters, not developers, decide Redwood City's future:

  • Measure W is the citizens initiative, placed on the ballot by Redwood City residents. Measure V was placed on the ballot by the City Council and would benefit out-of-state developers and land speculators.

  • Measure W is supported by thousands of Redwood City residents, environmental and community organizations, and opposed by developers from Arizona and Minnesota who want to pave San Francisco Bay.

  • Measure W provides strong protection for parks and open space, requiring that two-thirds of voters approve any development of open space. Measure V wouldn't protect any parks, and doesn't guarantee a clear public vote on specific development of Cargill salt ponds.

Redwood City residents voted to stop harmful development at Bair Island in 1982 and on our bayfront in 2004 + now we must do so again.

To protect our city parks and open space, vote YES on W and NO on V.

Measure W is a COSTLY and MISLEADING proposal that directly affects how your tax dollars are spent. Its primary sponsor is not even located in Redwood City!

DON'T BE FOOLED by Measure W -- IT'S NOT ABOUT PARKS AND OPEN SPACE!

The real goal of its outsider sponsors is to circumvent our city's Planning and Environmental Review process and subvert the democratic process -- at a great cost to taxpayers and homeowners.

THEY CLAIM IT PROTECTS PARKS, but:

  • Eighteen of the city's parks aren't even included!

  • Park and Recreation leaders Oppose Measure W!

THEY CLAIM IT PROTECTS OPEN SPACE, yet:

  • It actually covers hundreds of ALREADY BUILT-ON properties throughout Redwood City NOWHERE NEAR OPEN SPACE.

  • If Measure W passes, hundreds of homeowners could face costly citywide elections for routine home improvements.

Measure W is OPPOSED by the County Board of Supervisors, Redwood City Park and Recreation commissioners, Planning Commissioners, Council members, home owners, seniors and countless other Redwood City residents who care about our community because:

  • Measure W does nothing to add parks and recreation space.

  • Measure W dramatically AFFECTS HOW TAX DOLLARS ARE SPENT.

  • Measure W JEOPARDIZES FLOOD CONTROL.

  • Measure W directly AFFECTS the future of a new SENIOR CENTER.

  • Measure W will damage many individual homeowners' PROPERTY VALUES and infringe on their PRIVATE PROPERTY RIGHTS.

  • Measure W will make it much harder to build a commuter ferry terminal.

  • Measure W turns the community's planning and environmental review process upside down.

Measure W WILL BE A BONANZA FOR LAWYERS! If Measure W passes, our city will be tied up in lawsuits for years -- and WE WILL PAY THE BILL.

Don't be fooled! VOTE NO on Measure W!
