Milton Marks was born in San Francisco in 1959 to parents with family histories dating back to the California Gold Rush. He grew up in San Francisco's Richmond district with his sister Caro, his brother David, and his parents Milton Marks, Jr. and Carolene Marks.

The Marks family's commitment to serving the people of San Francisco goes back three generations, and Milton is the third "Milton Marks" to hold elective office in our city. His father, Milton Marks Jr., had a long and distinguished career as an Assemblyman, Judge, and, finally, State Senator, while Milton's grandfather served in the State Assembly representing San Francisco and on the Board of Supervisors.

Milton received his Bachelor's Degree in history from Bowdoin College in Maine, and his Master's Degree in historic preservation from the University of Pennsylvania. He spent his junior year of college at St. Andrews University in Scotland.

Upon completing his education, Milton began a career in the nonprofit sector, dedicating himself to promoting healthy, vibrant, and culturally rich communities.

From 1997 to 2002, Milton Marks served as Executive Director at Friends of the Urban Forest. More recently, he began working at Public Architecture, a San Francisco-based, national nonprofit organization whose goal is to bring the resources of architecture to communities who often lack a connection to design services.

Milton and his wife, Abigail, a clinical psychologist, live in the Parkside neighborhood of San Francisco with their three young sons: Nathan, Will, and Theo (and their four pets: Lucy, Roosevelt, Charlotte, and an unnamed goldfish).
