Omar for School Board "08"

By Omar Khalif

Candidate for Board Member; San Francisco Unified School District

This information is provided by the candidate
I am seeking to represent parents' voices through a position on the school board. In every election thousand upon thousand of men and women run for office all promising to close the achievement gap. I say we begin focusing on the "OPPORTUNITY AND CLASS GAPS". Also parents need a real voice to speak on their behalf.
I would like to open my candidacy for the 2008 Board of Education election by thanking the 15,000+ people who voted and supported me in my 2006 campaign. A resident of San Francisco for 19 years, I'm the proud parent of four daughters + two currently attending SFUSD public schools, which are: Gateway High School a SFUSD public charter school, Crystal Springs private Hillsborough Ca, KIPP Bayview Academy SFUSD public charter school; and Prairie View A&M University a HBCU. Also I will begin serving my first term as a Board of Trustee for Gateway High.

I am seeking to represent parents' voices through a position on the school board I believe that:

  • Parents should have the right to choose the school that meets their child's and family's needs, whether that school is located in their neighborhood or elsewhere in San Francisco.

  • Parents and students should be able to participate in any programs they deem successful to their future. i.e. JROTC, BAND, ARTS, SPORTS, etc.

  • No child should be advanced to the next grade if they are unable to demonstrate competency in their current grade level.

  • While it's important that we close the achievement gap, it is vital that we also address the opportunity gap that exists in our city and country.

  • In addition to being culturally competent, our teachers should also be curriculum compassionate.
