Candidate for Council Member; City of Oceanside

This information is provided by the candidate
I will address many issues including Public Safety, Traffic, Development, Environment, Seniors, Education, Youth & Keeping Open & Accountable Government.
Public Safety You deserve to feel safe wherever you go in our city. Public safety needs to be a priority and as our population grows and ages, our City Services need to be able to keep up with resident needs. You deserve to have a police officer come to protect you when you call and to have a paramedic or firefighter come quickly in an emergency.

Traffic It's time to get serious about traffic. Every new building project, every new housing area adds to the load on our local streets and highways. Many drivers use residential streets to cut through to some other destination. It's time we had a traffic plan for our entire city, rather than simply waiting for someone else to take care of it. It's a big issue and will take time to make it work, but it must happen.

Development I grew up in Oceanside and I know how important it is to maintain the character of our neighborhoods. That's why I am on the board of the Oceanside Coastal Neighborhood Association. I am also a member of the Chamber of Commerce and understand the need for prosperity without sacrificing the things we all love about Oceanside. Local jobs and the benefits they bring to our community are essential and sustainable.

Environment The air we breathe, the water we drink, and the earth we live on must be preserved for our children, as well as those who live here today. The City must be a good steward of our beautiful environment, and there are many simple steps that can be taken to improve upon Oceanside's environmental history. We are the only city in San Diego County to operate within State-mandated guidelines for recycling and reduction of landfill volume. I will work to develop partnerships with businesses that want to give back to the community and implement programs to benefit the environment. Endorsed by: Sierra Club of the United States & San Diego League of Conservation Voters

Education My daughter and I are proud graduates of Oceanside's public schools, including Oceanside High and Mira Costa College. I know how important it is to maintain great schools and to offer the opportunities our children need to be successful in the future. Though the schools are operated with State funding, Oceanside must provide support to keep them going and growing.

Veterans As a native of Oceanside and son of a veteran, I know the sacrifices that have been made by those who served and are currently serving. Veterans are underrepresented at all levels of elected office and I hope to ensure Veterans have a voice in our local government. I will also work to make sure our Veterans are recognized for their service and sacrifices.

Seniors Oceanside has an aging population and we need to provide for our seniors. I will ensure there are ample opportunities for seniors to participate in the community, and I will work to preserve and protect our current programs. I will also work to improve senior access to the available transportation options in Oceanside.

Youth In addition to supporting youth programs, I have taken other steps to improve our community. I have personally underwritten a non-violence program in Oceanside schools to educate students about the dangers of gangs. This helps everyone in Oceanside by reducing crime and creating more safety.

Open and Accountable Government The citizens of Oceanside deserve an open, accountable, and ethical government. The records of civic action are public information and should be posted on the City's website. I plan to create and maintain my own City Council website to keep the residents of Oceanside informed. I will send out email updates to anyone who signs up in order to keep them informed about current issues and what we can do to address them, because your community counts!
