Protecting our currently level of student spending

By Susan Sweeley

Candidate for Board Member; Mountain View-Los Altos Union High School District; 4 Year Term

This information is provided by the candidate
Our District is fortunate that it is able to spend over two times the state average - we need to protect it.
There is the continuing cloud of state budget deficits on the horizon. We have been extremely fortunate in navigating through these storms in the past. However with record setting deficits in the State of California and the national economic issues, we need to do everything possible to protect our current state funding, partner with community foundations and be prepared to professionally manage through what ever may come our way. This is the primary reason my involvement, along with the other Trustees and Administrative staff, with State lobby organization, members of the State Legislature, the California School Board Association and our local Community Foundations.

Our school district currently spends approximately $10,800 per student, which is more than two times the state level of nearly $5,000 for basic aid to schools. We are able to do this due to us not being a revenue limit school and instead use local property taxes for school funding. It is critical to the continued success of our school district to work closely with the State School Board, the California Teachers Association and the State Legislature to protect our current school funding status.
