Expanding Safety Preparedness for all Residents

By Ginger Summit

Candidate for Council Member; Town of Los Altos Hills

This information is provided by the candidate
We live in a very beautiful but fragile environment, and it is important that all residents be prepared for emergencies. The Town currently provides many opportunities for emergency preparedness, but the challenge is to expand that awareness to all residents of the town, especially at the neighborhood level.
Los Altos Hills occupies a unique location, in the center of three minor and surrounded by two large earthquake faults, and also threatened by a fire danger enhanced by our beautiful rural and hilly environment. The Fire District currently offers emergency preparedness classes that provide not only two levels of training classes but emergency kits for all interested residents. They have taken many proactive measures to clear brush and other fire hazards designed to help reduce the potential for major fire. The town also has a large volunteer Emergency Preparedness Committee to alert residents of emergency.

In addition, however, I feel strongly that it is important to reinstate Neighborhood Safety Networks. In this era of busy and working families, we often do not know our immediate neighbors and their unique needs. I will work to restore this very local, and vital, missing link in our safety network, helping to facilitate programs that will encourage neighbors to work together so that they will be able to respond immediately to special needs in each household.
