Two of Nuview Union Schools were in Program Improvement during the 2007-2008 School YearTwo of Nuview's four schools are in Program Improvement status, meaning that they have failed to meet student achievement targets. A fifty percent failure rate is unacceptable. According to the law - A school district that is identified as a Program Improvement School also must notify its parents/ guardians about its status, develop or revise its improvement plan, implement the revised plan, and provide additional high-quality staff development for its teachers. Yet the current administration and school board voted to dismiss seven veteran teachers so that they could have the option of replacing them with inexperienced teachers for half the price! Teacher's were left to seek out their own staff development and training from other school districts at considerable cost and wait for reimbursement. The state budget crisis calls for a reduction in spending. But these cuts need to be as far from the classroom as possible. The district's attempt to replace Highly Qualified Veteran Teachers with inexperienced teachers undermines our schools and hurts our kids. |
