Fiscal responsibility and public safety

By Nancy C. Horton

Candidate for Council Member; City of Canyon Lake

Ways to increase revenue without increasing taxes
Canyon Lake has 11,000 residents. There are two separate bureaucracies - the POA and CIty. We must ensure that there is no duplication of services and that the two entities complement one another. This requires close coordination of efforts so that citizens get all the services they need without needless escalation of cost. We have a Towne Centre that is underrepresented with retail stores. Every effort must be made to encourage more stores and restaurants. We cannot wait for Redevelopment to solve our problems. We need a sign on Railroad Canyon Road to inform potential shoppers of retail businesses in the Towne Centre. Our biggest challenge in the next several years is to continue and even increase the level of service from our police and fire departments. By keeping all other expenses lean, and looking at opportunities for responsible development that would enhance our quality of life and property values, and not destroy them, we can balance the budget. Our city can grow slowly and moderately if we plan well and foster teamwork between the POA, the City, and its citizens.
