Times-Standard newspaper 10/21/2004 Editorial endorsement:

"Michael Machi brings four years' experience helping the council in controversial debates on everything from public restrooms to affordable housing to the role of local governments in national politics. If re-elected, he'll be the most senior member of the council, lending some institutional knowledge to the novices.

"But that continuity isn't the only reason we support him. Machi is a moderate on an often left-leaning council, ably representing voices that sometimes get lost in the din. He's been instrumental as the council liaison to Humboldt State University, working alongside HSU President Rollin Richmond to restore previously fractured relations between the city and the university. He thoroughly does his homework on public policy. On a council where "people skills" are even more crucial than in other cities, he deals with impassioned and sometimes angry constituents respectfully and civilly, hearing out all sides of an issue".

Maureen Welsh, MFT, retired HSU Psychology lecturer:

"It is again my great pleasure to endorse Michael Machi for City Council. Michael's professionalism and preparedness on the Council are of great value, both in facilitating the efficacy of Council business, but also as a great model for Council newcomers who, if they are paying attention, learn that serving on the Council is much more than showing up and spouting off. For every controversial issue that arises, there are weeks and months spent slogging through the dull technical stuff. Michael handles the hot stuff and the dull stuff with the attention it requires. That's what makes him so great on the council.
Michael is a man of competence and infinite patience. When I was teaching Group Therapy at Humboldt, I suggested that my students watch him as an example of grace under pressure. He taught all of us a lot back then and still has much to contribute to our community.
Each time Michael has run for Council, he has asked for my support. And each time I have given it gladly and with relief that he was running again. Michael Machi does a great job for our community. I firmly support his bid for re-election to the Arcata City Council."

Alan Sanborn, local artist:

"I don't expect anyone to vote as I would 100% of the time, but I do trust that Michael will do his homework, demand the facts, sift through all the data, actively seek out opinions and then vote responsibly."

Miranda Cook, HSU All-American Crew team member:

"Michael listens to everyone and treats everyone with respect. He seems truly interested in representing all of Arcata."

Lisa Brown, Arcata Open Space Committee member:

"Now, more than ever, the significance of our resource lands cannot be neglected. Michael has been a consistent decision maker on issues (e)affecting our ag and forest lands and a strong advocate for their protection."

Frank Cheek, HSU twice National Championship Softball Coach:

"Mike has been a fresh breeze to a community for which he has been a part of for over three decades. His ideas add needed diversity to the Council. I strongly endorse his re-election."

John Graves, Former Chair of the Arcata Planning Commission:

"Michael is a dedicated public statement. He really studies hard on land-use issues."

James Washington, Arcata High School Track Coach:

"I've known Michael for 28 years and find him to be very honest. As a Councilmember, he understands the community and listens to all the people, and he has led Arcata in a positive direction for the past 8 years."

Gene Joyce, owner Arcata Exchange:

"Michael has been the balanced voice of reason for Arcata. Michael focuses on what is important for Arcata. We can depend on Michael to always be there to hear our ideas and concerns."
