When I was elected to the Board of Education eight years ago, I'd been a communications professional for 22 years, first for a Fortune 500 company then as principal of my own consulting business. I graduated from Mt. Diablo Unified School District and my daughter recently did as well. During her school years, I was an avid volunteer and parent club president.

Throughout my work life, I have dedicated myself to serving youth. My experience in business is among the many strengths I bring to Mt. Diablo Unified School District. I have

  • facilitated business and labor partnerships with our schools, and
  • insisted policies integrate career studies into core curriculum. I have helped teachers, students, and business leaders interact through
  • workshops,
  • science fairs, and
  • summer camps in such fields as engineering, construction, manufacturing, health, biotechnology, and environmental sciences.

I believe in accountability and using data to measure progress. District data show many successes. During my tenure, the District has successfully
  • updated graduation requirements;
  • increased graduation rates;
  • improved student achievement;
  • expanded students' access to honors and extracurricular programs;
  • created and strengthened career pathways in high schools;
  • leveraged more than $350 million to modernize school facilities;
  • improved services for students with special needs; and
  • greatly expanded both afterschool and preschool programs. All this was accomplished while balancing the budget every year -- on time.

More remains to be done. My priorities are to
  • attract and retain high quality employees through competitive compensation and
  • continue to improve student achievement. To this end I will seek new revenue sources.

I believe educational excellence ensures students are prepared for college, careers and lifelong learning. I will continue to find new ways to inspire young people to learn and to involve the greater community in our schools. My dedication to youth is unwavering.

I am committed to working with the entire MDUSD community for comprehensive school change for our students.

Your vote for APRIL TREECE ensures our children's future.
