• Career in academic medicine, with faculty positions at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Cornell University Medical College and the University of California, San Francisco
• Current position: Professor Emeritus, Department of Laboratory Medicine, University of California, San Francisco
• Served as chair of the Hematology section of NCCLS (now CLSI), the organization that establishes standards for diagnostic procedures and reagents for clinical laboratories through consensus of medical scientists, manufacturers and government agencies
• Served for 16 years as Chief of the Laboratory Medicine Service and Director of Clinical Laboratories at San Francisco General Hospital, with responsibility for ~150 employees and faculty members and a multimillion dollar operating budget
• Provided clinical services under the joint administration of the University of California and the City & County of San Francisco

• Director, Moraga-Orinda Fire District, Division 5, since 2002; Board President 2003-2004
• Commissioner, Orinda Public Safety Advisory Commission
• Director, Rescue One Foundation, which raises funds through voluntary contributions in support of medical services for the Moraga-Orinda Fire District

• Founder, Neighborhood Watch/Upper El Toyonal, a consortium of neighborhood preparedness groups (with about 12 block captains and 150 families) organized to promote family and neighborhood safety and emergency preparedness
