Goals for the Future

We have accomplished a lot but we have a lot of unfinished work ahead of us. Here are my goals moving forward:

Approval and implementation of the Climate Action Plan

  • Transportation + Transit/Mobility plan + car shares, bikes, shuttles, casual carpool
  • Locate infill development on transit corridors nodes
  • Zero Waste (purchase pooling for restaurants; plastic bottle ban)
  • Green Building Codes
  • Leverage MTC, Air Board and other regional bodies to fund Climate Change initiatives

Pilot Berkeley FIRST - Solar Financing plan in Fall 2008

Develop East Bay Green Corridor Partnership

  • Identify regional growth industries in green/clean businesses
  • Retain and Attract new businesses
  • Work regionally to develop Green/Clean Energy Career Pathways that lead into entry, mid- and high-level jobs

Invigorate the Economy
  • Downtown Area Plan (DAPAC) Implementation
  • Hotel/Conference Center and Berkeley Art Museum Development
  • West Berkeley Project
  • Retain and expand artists in West Berkeley and strengthen the arts citywide
  • Generate revenue for the Arts
  • Improve commercial districts +programs to improve street behavior; benches, bathrooms, trash cans

Implement the 2020 Vision for Berkeley's Children and Youth
  • Work with the school district and community to develop and implement a comprehensive plan with shared accountability with periodic reports to the School Board and City Council
  • Improve efficacy and measure outcomes for all our city departments working with kids
  • Work with community agency partners align funding with the 2020 Vision
  • Develop Career Pathways and expand youth employment in conjunction with Berkeley City College, Employment Programs, public sector, private sector and the arts
  • Support the YMCA Teen Center and the City Teen Nights

Promote healthy lifestyles and increase access to health services
  • Early childhood prevention, screening, services
  • Chronic Disease prevention and community outreach
  • Mental Health Services Act + expansion into prevention and early intervention.
  • Develop and improve recreational facilities: Regional Sports Facility at Gilman St.; Curvy Derby; and the public pools, including warm water pool.
