Porn and Libraries

It's time to make a clear statement -- keep porn out of our schools and libraries.
The recent debate in the Sacramento Library system about whether or not libraries have to provide access to porn as "free speech" shocks me. There should be no debate. Porn has no place in a public library. A public library is a place that children should be safe - a place of learning and encouragement.

A library is a place to read, to learn, to be a part of a community. Porn does not belong in our libraries anymore than it belongs in schools or community centers.

But liberals in library management seems to get this issue turned all upside down - they worry more about the ACLU's interpretation of free speech than the damage being done to our children.

Take the case of Librarian Brenda Biesterfeld at the Tulare County Library. She was fired for calling the police about a library patron who repeatedly viewed child pornography at the library. Her supervisor literally tried to turn police away, and later fired Beisterfeld for reporting it. The patron was later arrested for participating in the production or presentation of obscene matter in public places, and thousands of child pornography images were found in his home. You can read about the story here.

What these liberal library policies are protecting is the exploitation of children, and the "rights" of criminals.

I have called for state legislation that would ban pornography from being displayed within 500 feet of a minor or places where children may be present - including all schools and libraries.

It's time to make a clear statement -- keep porn out of our schools and libraries.
