We face three problems at the border. First, the smuggling of illegal drugs into the US. Second, illegal immigrants are crossing into the US. And third, the treat of criminals and terrorist entering the US across the border.
- The government has been fighting the war on illegal
drugs for 30 years at a cost of billons of dollars.
Whoever wants to use drugs can get them freely (even
in heavily guarded prisons), so by any measure the war
on drugs isn't working. Insanity is doing the same
thing over and over and expecting a different result.
Stopping the war on drugs will eliminate smuggling,
reduce violence, save taxes and put the drug lords out
of business. Treat drug use as an addiction. Develop
public awareness campaigns like the successful one in
Montana (see http://www.montanameth.org/index.php)
They were the 5th worst in the nation for meth use and
now they dropped to 39th. Since 2005 meth use in
Montana has drop 50% for
youth and 70% for adults.
- Toughen up penalties and enforce laws for employers
for hiring illegal workers.
- Physically secure our borders and coastlines. We must
control entry into our country before we undertake
complicated immigration reform proposals.
- No amnesty. Estimates suggest that 10 to 20 million
people are in our country illegally. That's a lot of
people to reward for breaking our laws.
- No welfare for illegal immigrants. Americans have
welcomed immigrants who seek opportunity, work hard,
and play by the rules. But taxpayers should not pay
for illegal immigrants who use hospitals, clinics,
schools, roads, and social services.
- End birthright citizenship. As long as illegal
immigrants know their children born here will be
citizens, the incentive to enter the U.S. illegally
will remain strong.
- Pass true immigration reform. The current system is
incoherent, burdensome and unfair. Current reform
proposals would allow up to 60 million more
immigrants into our country, according to the
Heritage Foundation. This is insanity. Legal
immigrants from all countries should face the same
rules and waiting periods.
