Fighting for great healthcare

By Stephen Derek Barkalow

Candidate for Member of the State Assembly; District 27; Democratic Party

This information is provided by the candidate
We can and will change the way healthcare is delivered and make it affordable for all
Our healthcare systen is broken. We spend nearly twice as much on health care as the average industrialized nation. Yet, accross the United States, 47 million people lack insurance. In California, 6.8 million people, nearly 1 in 5 state residents are uninsured. And this number is growing.

For those with insurance, things are not much better. Monthly premium costs are rising, while the quality of care is falling. It is difficult to be sure if our plans will fully cover us if we become ill or have an accident. Many who do have insurance try, but are unable to understand what their plans will cover.

Here is the bottom line: our healthcare system should ensure quality care for every patient, not record profits for drug and insurance companies. I will not stop fighting until every Californian has quality, affordable health care coverage that protects them and their families. I understand these issues, I am the only candidate who has worked within this system for 30 years. I know how to negotiate for a patient's rights.

I am determined to secure accessible and affordable healthcare for the people of California and I will not be swayed by special interest groups. Rather, I will form coalitions with health care groups who are also interested in bringing affordable care to all Californians. If you give me the chance to do this, you will also see that by reforming the current, very costly, system we have now, California will be able to allocate more funds to other areas in critical need of attention. By saving in health care costs, we will be able to address more of our needs in education, affordable housing, transportation, environment and more. It is time for a new kind of legislator. It is time to elect someone who is an expert in a critical area that affects all of us, someone who will actually make a difference in California's state legislature. It makes sense. There is a better way.
