BIOGRAPHY

Salud Carbajal

Salud was elected to the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors in March 2004. Supervisor Carbajal commenced his term of office representing the First District in January 2005, and is presently serving as 2008 Chair of the Board of Supervisors.

Salud Carbajal, 43, is a graduate of the University of California at Santa Barbara (UCSB) and also has a Masters Degree in Organization Management from the Fielding Graduate Institute. Salud served eight years in the United States Marine Corps Reserve, including active duty service during the 1991 Gulf War.

Salud is married to Gina and they are parents to 23-year-old Natasha and 8-year-old Michael. Salud has been a resident of Santa Barbara since 1983.

Throughout his professional career, Salud has demonstrated a commitment to public service. Salud served as Executive Staff to First District County Supervisor Naomi Schwartz from 1993 to 2004. Prior to his service in the First District, Salud was a Program Director in the Santa Barbara County Public Health Department, Assistant Executive Director of Zone Seca, Parent Involvement Coordinator for the Head Start Program, and Program Director for the City of Santa Barbara Lower Westside Recreation Program.

Salud is committed to protecting our cherished natural environment and resources, enhancing public safety, and working regionally to address our transportation, housing, and workforce challenges. He has championed the development of a comprehensive customer service program in county government to ensure responsive, effective, and accountable government for all residents and initiated the effort to create the Blue Ribbon Budget Task Force to examine our county budget process. Salud helped establish the Local Vendor Outreach Program to give local businesses a 6% preference advantage when competing for County goods and service procurement contracts. He has also been an advocate for health and social service safety net programs for our most vulnerable residents--children, frail and elderly, poor and the homeless. Specifically he co-sponsored an initiative to insure all our county's children and took part in the creation and adoption of the countywide Ten Year Plan to End Chronic Homelessness.

He is also helping to promote environmental stewardship through implementing conservation and sustainable living policies such as establishing a conversion technology facility at the Tajiguas Landfill, reducing the County's use of pesticides through its Integrated Pest Management Plan and advocated for the creation of the South Coast Watershed Task Force.

In addition to his service as Supervisor, Salud currently serves on the boards of the following government entities and community organizations:
