I AM A REPUBLICAN BECAUSE

I believe that the proper function of government is to do for the people those things that have to be done but cannot be done, or cannot be done as well, by individuals, and that the most effective government is that which is closest to the people through their state and community leaders, and not centralized in distant federal government bureaucracies.

I believe each person is responsible for his or her own place in society. Government should enable each person the ability to secure the benefits of society for themselves.

I believe that good government is based on the individual and that each person's ability, dignity, freedom and responsibility must be honored and recognized. Government intervention should be limited to being a catalyst of individual prosperity.

I believe that free enterprise and the encouragement of individual initiative and incentive have given this nation an economic system second to none. Government should help stimulate a business environment where people are free to use their talents.

I believe that sound money management should be our goal. Republicans must work tirelessly to cut government spending and to eliminate government waste. We believe individuals should control both their own and their government's pocketbook-the people should authorize all tax increases.

I believe in a strong national defense. I know that defending our nation against its enemies must be a fundamental commitment of the federal government and this requires the best-trained, best-equipped, and most effective military in the world. With America as the world's only superpower, I believe that true security comes from the strength of character to act collaboratively, when possible, and alone when necessary. The enemies we face are intent on destroying our nation and our way of life!

I believe in the citizen's right to keep and bear arms for personal, recreational and defensive use of themselves, their family and their property, against those who would attempt to harm them. I believe in sensible laws which preserve these rights, thereby upholding the Constitution of the United States, while preventing criminals, mentally disturbed persons and those intent on committing crimes from possessing guns.

I believe all students, regardless of race or socio-economic background, should become proficient in both reading and math. While it is desirable that children learn more than one language, mastery of the English language will allow our children to be competitive at the university level and in their places of work. Schools should be held accountable for student progress through performance based commonsense testing, which can be used to identify individual childrens' needs. This information, at both the student and school level, should be provided to the parents to ensure accountability.

I believe our nation is enriched by immigrants seeking a better life. In many cases immigrants have fled violence and oppression searching for peace and freedom. All suffered and sacrificed but hope for a better future for their children in America. Republicans agree that the lack of security along our borders has contributed to the flow of narco-trafficking, gang violence, and the yearly forced servitude and slavery of over 50,000 women and children from foreigh countries by human smugglers. While our nation has been enriched by the determination, energy, and diversity of immigrants, Republicans believe that this nation's laws and immigration policies should be followed and that securing our borders is vital to ensuring the safety of our citizens and our nation.

I believe in equal rights, equal justice and equal opportunity for all, regardless of race, creed, age, sex or national origin.

I believe the strength of this nation rests on a strong family based on the presence of a father and a mother. That societal structure is formed by the institution of marriage of one man and one woman. This structure insures the creation of children in the image of their parents, guided by them throughout their formative years and being instilled with the religious, social, moral and ethical values on which this nation was founded and has prospered for over 200 year.

I believe we must retain those principles of the past worth retaining, yet always be receptive to new ideas with an outlook broad enough to accommodate thoughtful change and varying points of view.

I believe that Americans value and desire to preserve their feeling of national strength and pride, and at the same time share with people everywhere a desire for peace and freedom and the extension of human rights throughout the world.

I believe that each person is created in the image of God and that we as human beings have a moral, ethical and religious obligation to protect those who cannot protect themselves, particularly the most vulnerable among us; children, born and unborn. We must protect and care for those who are weak, ill, infirm and aged, and unable to do so for themselves. Our society and our nation will not survive if we, as a people, become crass, callous, and uncaring of life as have so many societies in the past and in the world today.

Finally, I believe that the Republican Party is the best vehicle for translating these ideals into positive and successful principles of government.
