Jerry Winant Candidate Statement

By Jerry Winant

Candidate for Member; County Board of Education; Trustee Area 3

This information is provided by the candidate
My name is Jerry Winant and I am running for the Orange County Board of Education because I believe that I have the highest level of knowledge of educational systems and practices necessary to make wise decisions on what is best for students and staff. Currently, I hold several teaching credentials as well as an administrative credential for kindergarten through 12th grades. For the past 28 years, I have taught, coached and served as both a teacher or as an administrator at the elementary, middle school and high school levels. As a district-wide mentor for many years, I had the responsibility of helping other teachers learn basic and advanced teaching strategies. I also designed a system to help identify and service students with special learning needs.

I am the recipient of two Teacher of the Year awards as well as District Teacher of the Month honors. During the past 12 years, I have played a major role in building a fledgling alternative education program into a fully accredited, highly honored program that boasts the highest test scores among all of the high schools in my district.

I also know what is required to be an effective member of a `board'. I have served on homeowner association boards as both a member and an officer. At the present time, I am serving as President of the Vista Heights Estates Homeowners Association for the 3rd year in a row.

Orange County has some of the most diverse, unique, and effective alternative and regular education programs in the state of California. To maintain and add to this success, we need progressive thinkers and experienced leaders in the field of education who can make complex and difficult decisions. We need board members who have been working in the schools who understand the educational, physical and emotional needs of children. Would you want a person with no medical experience making a decision on what type of medical care is best for you and your children? Why, then, would you want a volunteer, with no practical experience in the field of education, to make decisions on what is educationally best for your children?

I believe I am the best prepared and most qualified candidate in District 3 for the Orange County Board of Education! Thank you for your time reading this and for your participation in the election on June 3rd.
