Universal Medical Care

By Richard Schwartz, PE

Candidate for Member, Democratic Party County Central Committee; County of Los Angeles; Assembly District 51

Why the opposition?
Universal medical care will solve a lot of problems.

  • Employee health benefits are a large cost item for industrial companies. With universal health care, that cost would be eleminated. I have heard that the wholesale cost of a General Motors car might drop by $7000. That would make GM more competitive, and they could rehire some of the millions who were laid off. Those millions would pay taxes! Why is George Bush opposed to that?

  • Employee health benefits are used by corporate employers as a stick-and-carrot to enforce compliance with management wishes and to suppress dissent. Employees are frequently afraid to challenge unfair or illegal management practices because they fear loss of their health care coverage. Universal health care would liberate workers from this fear and empower them to seek a better workplace.

  • Insurance companies, in order to control their cost, earn greater returns for their shareholders, and provide their executives fatter paychecks, use all kinds of dirty tricks to avoid covering. The most common trick is the "pre-existing condition". Or they will not cover psychiatric, drug-related, or other common illnesses. This gap in coverage would be eliminated with universal health care.

  • We should be ashamed at the way we treat veterans. Their biggest problem is lack of health care. When they get it, it is substandard, as recently demonstrated at Walter Reed hospital. Universal health care would solve this problem for them.

Universal health care could benefit the capitalists as well as the people. You are already paying for a corrupt and inefficent system; it is time to change it.

The Democratic Party is the most powerful organizatio working to achieve universal health care.
