Experience and Accomplishments:

  • As production manager for a local manufacturer, I helped to grow the company by 500%, creating good-paying local jobs.

  • As a manufacturing consultant, I helped businesses here and around the country develop new products and improve their production to reach new markets.

  • As founder of both the Sunny Brae Arcata Neighborhood Alliance and the Arcata Forest Fund, I have brought nearly $3 million in grants to the Third District for the acquisition of the Sunny Brae Forest and the Bayview Ranch, protecting 500 acres of open space.

  • As President of the Humboldt Watershed Council I have authored two successful appeals to the State Water Board and achieved significant improvements to the protection of water quality in California.

  • As co-founder and program coordinator of the Healthy Humboldt Coalition I have worked to protect our environment and preserve open space and working lands by making our cities attractive, vibrant and healthy places where people want to live, work and play.

  • As a member of the Steering Committee for the Humboldt Partnership for Active Living I have advocated for healthier, walkable communities, trails, and alternative transportation.

  • As a founding member of the Community Forestry Team I have worked to attract over half-a-billion dollars in private capital investment to acquire and manage the Pacific Lumber Company for the long-term benefit of the environment and the local community.

  • I have advocated for programs and policies that would ensure a supply of housing to meet the needs of the whole community.

  • Through Citizens for Real Economic Growth I have sought to educate the community on the economic, environmental and social advantages of locally-grown businesses.

  • I have monitored and analyzed the Pacific Lumber Company's financial crisis since 2003, helping to prepare the community for the coming bankruptcy and reorganization and the opportunity it presents.

  • I have fought corruption and worked for transparency and fairness in government by seeking 2 FPPC investigations into conflicts-of-interest.

  • I have served on the Advisory Board for Humboldt Baykeeper and on the Humboldt Committee of the Redwood Forest Foundation, Inc.

  • I have worked cooperatively with a broad variety of local, State and Federal agencies, both here and in Sacramento.

  • I have volunteered significant time and expertise with more than a dozen community groups and organizations, including the Redwood Children's Discovery Museum, the Camp Unalayee Association, the Raven Project, the RCAA's Youth Services Bureau, the Humboldt Area Foundation's Scholarship Committee, and in my daughter's schools.

  • I have been an invited speaker at dozens of events around the State, speaking on Social License, Environmental Ethics, Conflict Resolution, Coalition Building, and numerous other topics.
