Contra Costa County, CA June 3, 2008 Election
Smart Voter Political Philosophy for Richard Mossman

Candidate for
Member, Democratic Party County Central Committee; County of Contra Costa; Supervisorial District 5

This information is provided by the candidate

I want to be a point of contact for the citizens of the 5th Supervisory District to communicate their issues to the County Central Committee.

Promote the development of an active Democratic Club in the 5th Supervisor District. Work with local city councils, school boards, and officials to communicate the issues and needs of their constituents.

Work with state and national representatives on local issues and interests.

I believe corporate and lobbyist money and interests have subverted our democratic processes. I believe we must move to public funding of elections. Quit wasting money on more and more expensive campaigns, for what are supposed to be, public service positions.

We need to do what we can to reduce the congestion on our roads, the pollutions going into our atmosphere, and the time wasted in traffic. We need to look at alternatives to commuting. I think we need to offer incentives to companies who allow and promote their employees to telecommute, when appropriate.

We also need to convince communications companies to provide high speed internet to the remote (and therefore, less profitable) communities of the county and state. This would aid people in many ways: children in their studies, doctors in diagnosing ailments, operations of businesses large and small.

Single Payer health care will drastically reduce the cost of health care and provide the same level of opportunity for all citizens of California and the United States.

I feel there is money wasted because citizens don't understand what they are truly voting for in a proposition or bond issue. Too many of these bonds contain clauses where a governor can move money approved for roads or schools into the state's general fund and use it for whatever he wants without any real need to reimburse the money and use it for the wishes of the voters. I think an informed population could end this practice and show our assembly and senate members that we expect our taxes to be used the way we have mandated by our vote.
