Food and Economic Security

By Sean Sullivan

Candidate for Council Member; City of Oakland; Council District 3

This information is provided by the candidate
I will immediately work on drawing together all of the dynamic resources and food pioneers the Bay Area is blessed with to come up with a Food Access Action Plan within the first 6 months of office.
Two years ago, the Oakland City Council received a Food System Assessment that demonstrated Oakland's high rate of food insecurity - 78% of eligible households are not enrolled in the food stamp program! Since that date, no effort has been made to increase participation. As a councilmember and a current member of HOPE, the Alameda County Food Bank's Kellogg Foundation funded collaborative to develop a plan addressing food access, I will immediately draw together all of the dynamic resources and food pioneers the Bay Area is blessed to come up with a Food Access Action Plan within the first 6 months of office. To this end we will:

  • Initiate aggressive outreach to inform residents of food stamp enrollment program.

  • Work with school district, district based non-profits, and the philanthropic community to ensure a vegetable growing garden at every school in the district and to create a universal school breakfast program for all schools.

  • Work with existing farmer's markets to provide access for customers with food stamps/EBT cards as their primary method of payment.

  • Promote the access and harvest of culturally appropriate, locally grown, affordable and sustainable organic produce.

  • Partnering with local neighborhood associations create green spaces and parks out of underutilized streets adjacent to small parks and community gardens.

  • Build partnerships with existing grocers and community gardens, local farmers, and programs that help sell healthier foods to the community.

  • I support doubling city funds for Green Job development with realistic zoning and a West Oakland/Oakland Army Base plan that includes greenlining and green sector job creation.

  • I will work with local organizations and City Administration to develop a Master Green Plan for greening the city including tree planting, corner waste receptacles, composting, and water fountains.

  • I will work with community organizations to create compost spots in the district that will support community gardens and provide more nutritional education. Poor nutrition in childhood leads to long term developmental disadvantages.
