The 2nd Amendment

By Walter Stanley, III

Candidate for Member, Republican Party Central Committee; County of Alameda; Assembly District 15

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.
I have a "no compromise" approach to defending the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. The fight to preserve an armed citizenry is a key battle in the war to defend freedom. I not only support the "individual" right to keep and bear arms, I value it, as I myself am a firearm owner.

The 2nd Amendment has been attacked, eroded and marginalized by anti-gun legislation and anti-rights politicians year after year. Massive disinformation campaigns organized by the left, involve petty untruths and carefully crafted exaggerations that are used to distort the facts. Subversive tactics, such as these, are used to appeal to the voter's emotions rather than their common sense and reason. Despite the obvious "feel-good" emotions that politicians must experience when they enact anti-gun laws, they undoubtedly fail to recognize the inherent dangers embedded into the repressive legislation itself. Lets not forget, these law-makers, are not the types to let the facts get into the way. They simply ignore the reality that gun control encourages bad people to prey upon disarmed victims. Prisoners incarcerated for committing violent felonies have revealed (in surveys) that while committing their crimes, they are much more worried about armed victims than about the police.

Government hostility towards gun owners and firearms needs to stop! National studies show that higher gun ownership rates are associated with lower crime rates. In many cases simply brandishing a weapon is enough to deter an attack. The main stream media aides the anti-gun lobby by falling short of their constitutional obligation to the American people. Media outlets routinely under report self-defense altercations that involve firearms in a positive sense. This is not due to a shortage of self-defense cases in the U.S. because it happens millions of times each year.

The courts have consistently ruled that the police do not have an obligation to protect individuals, therefore we must stand against any laws that reduce or restrict the people's ability to defend themselves. An openly armed public is a more respectful society due to the checks and balance that the firearm provides. Gun control does not equal crime control and this must be taken into consideration. As Americans, we owe a lot to the gun and we should all respect eachothers right to own them.

The golden rule to live by is... with any right, comes responsibility. We need responsible firearm owners and the vast majority of Americans are!
