Olu's Statement

By Olugbemiga "Olu" Oluwole, Sr.

Candidate for School Director; Oakland Unified School District; District 3

This information is provided by the candidate
Reform of Oakland School District 3; Review of curricular to include Vocational Electives; Teacher staffing that reflect demographic of campuses; Campus Security; Collaboration of community school district, parents and teachers.
My interest in running for the Oakland School Board Director's position for District 3 came as a result of my background in Criminal Justice Administration, Corrections & Rehabilitation of CDCR's ex-felons. As a Facility and Program Manager of Community Correctional Re-entry Centers for parolees who are paroled to the Bay Area, in the past six years, I have served and observed a large number of incarcerated parents going through the revolving doors of the California Criminal Justice System. At the same time, during numerous counseling sessions with my parent clients, I also found out that the ultimate victims of these cycles of parental absences and neglect are the children. Then we have law abiding and hard working couple parents, and single parents, who are forced to take up second jobs sometimes, or work extra hours to make up for the demands of our poor economy, thereby spending less time with the children.

The Oakland Unified School System should provide a cushion to absorb some of the negative impact on children from lack of 'first line of education' in their lives, by providing a sustainable and empowering education to the children, has also woefully failed them.

In this light, I propose to advocate for and support reformative measures that will take the future of our children seriously by providing the necessary resources, choices, and policies that will help to eradicate truancy, poor performance, teacher flight, and crime in our schools.

The following are the issues most pressing to my candidacy:

  • Return of local control to the Oakland Unified School District.
  • Reduction of school size for better student oversight and attention.
  • Review of curriculum to include more vocational electives for choices. Will help to stem truancy.
  • Review of Teachers' salaries for attraction and retention of good and qualified teachers.
  • Attention to cultural, ethnic, and religious diversities in our schools, by recruiting teachers that match these diversities.
  • Provision of State of the Art equipment, materials, and technology to provide students with a competitive edge in global technology.
  • A safe, clean, and conducive education environment to engender learning by providing adequate security personnel on campuses.
  • Encouragement of more parent involvement for parent/teacher/school board collaboration for community inclusiveness.
  • Budget accountability.

I therefore, humbly solicit your support to represent Oakland Unified School District 3 in this endeavor.
