Oakland Can Lead the Way as a Green City
Visioning Oakland as a Green City

I envision Oakland as continuing to be one of the top green cities in the nation with an emphasis on clean air for all, decreasing oil use and greenhouse gases. Every Oaklander's air will be clean and free from toxics. Our business community will embrace sustainability principles. Oakland will have an excellent public transit system, bike routes and pedestrian walkways. We will produce healthy food locally and encourage a vibrant local economy.

GREENING OAKLAND + My Work on District 3 Parks and Landscaping Working with you, I am pleased to have:  Improved Bertha Port, Willow and Raimondi parks. Rehabbed Mandela Parkway, Cleveland Cascades, and Sensory Gardens. Cleaned up Lafayette Park.  Supported neighborhood and City Slickers efforts to transform Fitzgerald Park into a community garden. Transformed Jefferson Park into a skate park for youth.  Established new dog parks at Mosswood and Lake Merritt. My priorities are to:

  • Continue my fight to eliminate and reduce asthma and cancer-causing diesel pollution in West Oakland. Get trucks rerouted and truck parking out of our neighborhoods.
  • Review and monitor permits of businesses emitting toxics with the Air Board periodically to assure air quality standards are met and improved.
  • Implement the City's bike plan for more safe routes and bike racks.
  • Require cold ironing of ships at the Port (alternative energy to cheap jet fuel)
  • Bring the recommendations of the Oil Independent Oakland Task Force to the City Council for implementation.
  • Continue and expand partnerships with Emeryville and Berkeley to provide more renewable energy to our communities
  • Work with developers and AC Transit to create a clean energy, free transit loop in downtown, and link more locations to public transit (e.g. Army Base and Oak to 9th).
  • Conduct community education on water conservation.
  • Recognize and support businesses that become green.
  • Implement our Zero Waste plan and fund necessary upgrades to storm drain system.
  • Increase neighborhood organic gardening, especially associated with schools. Encourage stores to carry organic produce.
  • Strengthen the city's Integrated Pest Management system and monitor/discourage state-authorized aerial spraying.
